Yes, if you are looking for peace and quiet. Le Fornet is a residential hamlet at around 1,940 m, with the cable car leaving from the village and easy walks towards the Pont Saint Charles. The Val d’Isère ski area has 12 green runs and 31 blue runs, but the very first lessons are given in the centre of Val d’Isère or in La Daille.

Can you learn to ski in Le Fornet?

First steps are taken in the centre of Val d’Isère or in La Daille, where the beginner carpets are. The ESF Val d’Isère offers the Jardin des Neiges for 3-4 year olds, children's lessons from 5 to 12 years old and adult lessons. From Le Fornet, those who already have the basics can reach blue runs such as Pyramides de l’Iseran or Mangard. To stay close to the lessons, tick the “Near ski school” filter.

Is Le Fornet suitable for good skiers?

Yes. The Fornet cable car goes up to around 2,330 m, then the Vallon de l’Iseran gondola leads to the Pisaillas glacier and the Col de l’Iseran. The ski area peaks at 3,456 m, with 24 red runs and 11 black runs, and it is linked to Tignes.

How do you get to Le Fornet without a car?

Take the train to Bourg-Saint-Maurice, then a bus or shuttle to Val d’Isère. In the resort, the free shuttles serve Le Fornet, with a Village du Fornet stop and a Téléphérique du Fornet stop. The hamlet is east of the centre, at the end of the valley: find the stop closest to your accommodation.

How does the “Comfort level” filter work?

The “Comfort level” filter is used to find “Evasion”, “Prestige” or “Signature” accommodation. The hamlet at the end of the valley

Le Fornet is the hamlet at the far end of the valley, east of Val-d’Isère, at around 1,940 metres. The chalets and mountain hotels line the main road, and the base station of the cable car that goes up towards the Iseran and the Pisaillas is in the hamlet. When renting in Le Fornet, find the shuttle stop closest to your accommodation: you are away from the centre.

What kind of stay

Le Fornet suits those who want to reach the top of the ski area by cable car, or who prefer peace and quiet and outings on foot or on snowshoes in the valley. With young children, the ESF Jardin des Neiges and the first beginner slopes are in the centre of Val-d’Isère.

The pace of the village

The hamlet is residential, with a few shops, and much quieter than the centre of Val-d’Isère.

Heading up high

When skiing, the day starts at the Fornet cable car, whose base station is in the hamlet. It arrives at around 2,330 metres, at the start of the Vallon de l’Iseran. From there, the Vallon gondola goes up towards the Pisaillas glacier and the Col de l’Iseran.

Runs to know

The Pyramides de l’Iseran blue run starts from the top station of the Fornet cable car, to the left of the Pyramides chairlift. Its name recalls the old nineteenth-century pyramids. To return to Le Fornet, Mangard is a quieter blue run back down.

To progress

To learn, you need to rely on the beginner carpets in the centre of Val-d’Isère and in La Daille. Skiers who already have the basics can reach gentle blue runs via the cable car, the Vallon gondola and the Cascade chairlift.

The ski area

Le Fornet is part of the Val d’Isère ski area, linked to Tignes. This ski area has 152 km of runs and 41 lifts, from 1,850 to 3,456 metres in altitude.

Walks and days without skis

From the hamlet of Le Fornet, footpaths and snowshoe trails lead to the Pont Saint Charles, the Laisinant path and the valley. The two easiest, the S7 between the snow front and Le Fornet and the S8 from Le Fornet to the Pont Saint Charles, are well suited to families.

With children

On these trails, you can observe alpine wildlife, including ibex and eagles.

Going higher

Pedestrians can go up to the Col de l’Iseran, at 2,764 metres, and the Notre-Dame de Toute Prudence chapel: Fornet cable car, Vallon gondola, then a path. From the top of the Cascade chairlift, at around 3,118 metres, the view looks out over the glaciers.

Access to the hamlet

To reach Le Fornet by train, the nearest main station is Bourg-Saint-Maurice, then you continue by shuttle or bus to Val-d’Isère. By road, the RD 902 leads to the hamlet and continues towards the Col de l’Iseran, but this section towards the Maurienne is closed from early November to early June depending on snow conditions.

Getting around the resort

Val-d’Isère's free shuttles serve Le Fornet. The Train rouge goes there, with a Village du Fornet stop and a Téléphérique du Fornet stop.

For pedestrians

With the Pass Piéton, you can take the Solaise gondola, the Fornet cable car and the Vallon gondola without skis.
